PORTUGAL CAN NOT STOP THE ASIAN HORNET FROM SPREADING

PORTUGAL CAN NOT STOP THE ASIAN HORNET FROM SPREADING

Last Monday, October 26, 2015, the national newspaper Público published a news piece focusing on the progress of the Asian hornet in our country. This is an invasive species, which specializes in the predation of bees, and that often install its nests in urban areas. These features have led it to be considered a threat to biodiversity and to public health.

The entomologist José Manuel Grosso-Silva, a collaborator of CIBIO-InBIO, argues that the hornet is here to stay and calls attention to the fact that, at this stage, it is very important that our country improves the detection mechanisms and preventive control of these insects.
