PHOTO TAKEN DURING A CIBIO-InBIO EXPEDITION FEATURED AS 8000th SPECIES TO BOARD THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC PHOTO ARK

The expedition to the Portugal’s Douro region, where the photo was taken, integrates the work of a CIBIO-InBIO research team which aims to better understand this species and its habitat. Research on Pyrenean desman is especially important now because the population of this species has fallen by about 60 percent over the past 20 years.

The National Geographic Photo Ark aims to document every species currently living in the world’s zoos and wildlife sanctuaries helping, this way, wildlife conservation efforts.
