NEW SCORPION SPECIES NAMED AFTER ARIE VAN DER MEIJDEN

In an article published by the scientific journal Zootaxa, a Colombian research team described a new scorpion species from Colombia in the genus Troglotayosicus Lourenço, 1981. The team named the brand new scorpion which inhabits the forest leaf litter at Eastern Andes, as Troglotayosicus meijdeni sp. nov. after CIBIO-InBIO researcher Arie van der Meijden. Even though it was still not possible to observe the male specimen, this species could be distinguished from other species in the genus by the female (and juvenile) morphology.

This finding is another great improvement on the number of known species of Troglotayosicus that has now risen to four. This is not only a great step in the advancement of scientific knowledge, but one that also highlights and honors the exquisite research work developed by Arie van der Meijden on these fascinating creatures.
