LUÍS PALMA AND THE OSPREY’S CONSERVATION PROJECT AT BIOSFERA

LUÍS PALMA AND THE OSPREY’S CONSERVATION PROJECT AT BIOSFERA

The weekly magazine, which highlights various environmental themes, shed some light on three projects conservation projects focusing on birds of prey. Highlighted amongst these projects was the joint protocol established by CIBIO-InBIO and EDP aiming to promote the reintroduction and conservation of osprey in Portugal.

In the episode broadcasted on January 23, 2016, CIBIO-InBIO researcher, Luís Palma explained that the ospreys, which had disappeared from the Iberian Peninsula until 2011, are now slowly coming back due to reintroduction efforts carried out in Spain and Portugal. The tasks involved in these projects include the introduction of young birds in new territories with the goal of establishing new nesting areas and repopulating various zones that were abandoned.

Even though the project carried out by CIBIO-InBIO and EDP finishes this year, the team foresees the possibility of it being extended, since much work is yet to be done, namely in what concerns the construction of new artificial nesting areas for ospreys and the implementation of effective measures to preserve natural coastal zones. The outcomes of this project also stress the need to set new rules for the maintenance of food supplies of birds of prey in Portugal that can contribute for the conservation of these species.
