Joana Bernardino wins the PhD Award in Ecology 2022

CIBIO-InBIO researcher Joana Bernardino is the winner of the 2022 edition of the PhD Award in Ecology - Fundação Amadeu Dias, an initiative of the Portuguese Society of Ecology (SPECO) that rewards the writer of the best PhD thesis in any area of Ecology, defended in Portuguese Universities, regardless of the nationality of the candidates.

The award-winning research was conducted as part of the BIODIV Doctoral Programme and aimed to significantly advance the understanding of bird collisions with power lines and to further develop the methods used to quantify and mitigate this impact. Joana Bernardino highlights that her work "can help electric power companies to improve their current practices, so that the much-needed electricity grid development is done in a sustainable way and ensuring biodiversity conservation”.

This work was conducted within the scope of the REN Biodiversity Chair, an ongoing research program created in the context of a protocol set between CIBIO, REN - Rede Eléctrica Nacional, S.A. and FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia).
