IS THERE STILL HOPE FOR THE EUROPEAN RABBIT?

The conservation status of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) has moved to Endangered in the areas where it is native: Portugal, Spain and France. According to the IUCN this change is due to the high decline (up to 70%) and fragmentation of their populations.
During an interview (for the online magazine Wilder) CIBIO-InBIO researchers addressed the causes that may explain these changes. A new variant of the rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus is now also affecting smaller juveniles, making them weaker and preventing them from reaching adulthood.
Although immunity to this disease is increasing, researchers warn of the need to promote population resilience. This could be achieved by controlling predation and hunting activities, increasing food availability or managing their habitats, provided that site-specific threats are adequately investigated. However, regular monitoring programs are key to understanding the current status and trends of European rabbit populations throughout the country and to implementing the most appropriate management actions.
