HOW TO PREDICT THE IMPACT OF WOLBACHIA BACTERIA ON DENGUE TRANSMISSION BY MOSQUITOES?

HOW TO PREDICT THE IMPACT OF WOLBACHIA BACTERIA ON DENGUE TRANSMISSION BY MOSQUITOES?

n a paper recently published by the prestigious scientific journal Nature Communications, a team, which includes CIBIO-InBIO researchers Jessica King and Gabriela Gomes, has obtained results that challenge previous procedures by pointing out that populations of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected by Wolbachia have a greater potential to transmit dengue but the effects of the bacteria on mosquitoes are highly variable and in some conditions reduced transmission can be predicted.

The article, which now has been highlighted by the media, shows that, in this kind of analysis, only considering the mean values compromises the predictive capacity, and that the alignment of the predictions should vary according to the environment.
