GLOBAL TRADE IN WILD BRIDS

GLOBAL TRADE IN WILD BRIDS

In a paper recently published by the scientific journal Science Advances, an international team which included CIBIO-InBIO researchers Luís Reino, Rui Figueira, Pedro Beja, Miguel Araújo e César Capinha, investigated the international trade of wild birds before and after the EU´s ban in 2005. The team analysed the data on the records of wild bird trade from CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) and observed that before 2005, Europe was the main importer of wild birds. After this period, not only the global trade had remarkable decrease, but trade routes have shifted away from Western Europe. The According to Luís Reino “the documented shift in wild bird trade towards areas with a high biodiversity is a matter of concern. The extent of captured birds can lead to depletion of natural populations”. The researchers also highlighted that interna-tional bird trade is a main cause of exotic birds spreading around the world.
