eLTER RI WAS FEATURED BY EUROPEAN STRATEGY FORUM ON RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURES

This Roadmap identifies new Research Infrastructures (RI) of pan-European priority and Integrated European Long-Term Ecosystem, Critical Zone & Socio-Ecological Research Infrastructure (eLTER RI) is now among them.

According to the coordinator of eLTER RI, Michael Mirtl, “when fully operational, eLTER RI will be a permanently funded and managed, distributed infrastructure of field sites covering European environmental zones”. These field sites will be designed to support excellent science on the functioning of our life supporting systems.

One of these sites located in Portugal, Baixo Sabor Long-Term Ecological Research, is coordinated by CIBIO-InBIO researcher Pedro Beja. The Baixo Sabor LTER site is located in the region of Trás-os-Montes, within the watershed of the Sabor river.

Research at this sites focuses on improving the understanding on the long-term consequences of river damming on freshwater and adjacent terrestrial ecosystems, and how these effects interact with other socio-economic and environmental drivers operating at scales from local (e.g., land use changes) to global (climate change, biological invasions).
