CONSERVATION OF THE AZORES WOODPIGEON

CONSERVATION OF THE AZORES WOODPIGEON

Columba palumbus azorica is a subspecies of the Common Woodpigeon which can only be found in Azores. Due to the lack of knowledge about the biology and ecology of this species in the island ecosystem, the Regional Government of Azores decided to support research on this subject, aiming to outline management and conservation measures for the species.

The project, approved for funding in 2012, has the title AZORPI - “Ecology and evolution of the Azores woodpigeon: support tools for a management and conservation strategy" Ecologia e Evolução do Pombo-torcaz: ferramentas para uma estratégia de gestão e conservação and the research team includes CIBIO-InBIO members: Rémi Fontaine, Tiago Rodrigues, Pedro Andrade, David Gonçalves, Paulo Célio Alves, Miguel Carneiro and José Carlos Brito. This project, which conclusion is expected to the end of 2015, was highlighted in Açores Magazine.
