CIBIO-InBIO RESEARCHERS PROVIDE EXPERT VIEW ON THE LINK BETWEEN CLIMATE CHANGE AND INVASIVE SPECIES

The online platform Clima@EduMedia recently published a report entitled “Espécies invasoras estão a ganhar terreno “, raising awareness towards the expansion of invasive plant species in our country and how this phenomenon may relate to climate change, and to land use practices and management.

In this report, authored by Cláudia Azevedo, Paulo Alves highlights that the national picture is one of grave seriousness, especially in what concerns coastal areas, where native vegetation is being replaced by alien species. The researcher also notes that climate change is affecting the flora, particularly mountain species. In turn, Joana Vicente draws attention to prospective climate change scenarios, which foresee an even greater expansion of these invasive species both in altitude (spreading to lower heights) and across the country (advancing inwards, towards the inland). In view of this, Joana stresses that a good use and land management policy is of paramount importance in the control of these plants.
