CIBIO-InBIO RESEARCHERS PARTICIPATED IN THE 2018 PINT OF SCIENCE FESTIVAL

CIBIO-InBIO RESEARCHERS PARTICIPATED IN THE 2018 PINT OF SCIENCE FESTIVAL

The Pint of Science festival is an annual event that occurs in hundreds of cities across the world, at the same time. It aims to deliver interesting and relevant talks on science and to provide a platform which allows people to discuss research with the people who carry it out and no prior knowledge of the subject is required.

On May 15, at Cervejaria do Carmo, Evolution was discussed with the participation of two CIBIO-InBIO PhD students. Malgorzata Gazda talked about artificial selection and the genes involved in the colour of canary birds, more specifically the recent findings on the genetics of red coloring. In the end, she showed some more interesting examples of genes and traits and some studies on humans.

Mafalda Sousa Ferreira presented a talk entitled presented a talk entitled “Era uma vez uma lebre branca e um Inverno cada vez mais curto: Uma história sobre evolução” (Once upon a time, there was a white-hare and an increasingly shorter winter: a story on evolution). During her intervention, she showed how studying the evolution of the seasonal coat color change in hares (genus Lepus spp.) could contribute to a better understanding of the evolutionary process in general.

On May 16, again at Cervejaria do Carmo the evening was dedicated to the human being and the environment. CIBIO-InBIO researcher Albano Beja-Pereira contributed to the discussion with an interesting perspective on the impact of animals’ domestication on humans and the environment.
