BIOPOLIS/CIBIO-InBIO contributes to the "rediscovery" of the Iberian wolf in Extremadura
The confirmation of the occurence of an Iberian wolf specimen in the Region of Extremadura (Spain) has been recently highlighted in the Spanish media.

The identification of a female in that region, where the Iberian wolf was extirpated, was possible using genetic non-invasive sampling, using DNA from feces. This analysis was carried out by BIOPOLIS/CIBIO-InBIO researchers (Raquel Godinho, João Queirós and Paulo Célio Alves), under a collaboration with the Interreg Project BIOTRANS and Junta de Extremadura.

The results also suggest that the sample corresponds to an individual from the centre/north population in Spain, genetically distinct from the Portuguese populations.
