A Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference BIOPOLIS 2023-17), in the scope of the research group CONGEN – Conservation Genetics and Wildlife management, is available at CIBIO/Associação BIOPOLIS to develop work in dietary analyses of small mammals in Northern Portugal, with Professor Paulo Célio Alves and Dr João Queirós as scientific coordinators.

Main research field: Biological Sciences.

Admission requirements: Candidates must be attending a Master study program in the area of Biological Sciences and with some experience in the laboratory and statistical analysis. We seek candidates with i) experience in working with non-invasive samples and analyses of high throughput DNA sequencing data; ii) bioinformatic skills in metabarcoding analyses; iii) highly motivated in conducting conservation genetics studies; iv) good verbal and written communication skills in English; and v) good communication and teamwork skills. The candidate’s Curriculum Vitae must be compatible with the work plan.

Working plan: the candidate will analyze the trophic niche overlap of several small mammals species inhabiting in the traditional agroecosystems of northern Portugal. This will be done using data obtained from metabarcoding analysis of feaces. In particular, the candidate will be able to conduct 1) bioinformatic analysis of metabarcoding data ; 2) statistical analysis and modelling of the trophic niche; and 3) literature review and preparation of manuscripts.

Work Place: The work will primarily be carried out at the CIBIO-InBIO pole of Vairão, Vila do Conde, and may be partly performed remotely.

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have duration of 3 months, potentially renewable for additional period, starting on 1th April.

Monthly stipend: Monthly stipend is €930,98 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) in case of renewal and accident insurance.

Selection criteria: Assessment will be made in accordance with admission requirements (see above) and will be based on: 
a) the quality of the curriculum vitae (40%); 
b) the relevance of previous experience (40%); 
b) motivation letter for conducting the study (10%). 

The jury may interview the first three candidates (10%), and not award the fellowship if the quality of the candidates is inferior than 60% of the total evaluation.

Jury composition: The Jury will be chaired by Professor Paulo Célio Alves (FCUP-CIBIO/BIOPOLIS), having as effective members Dr. João Queirós (CIBIO/BIOPOLIS ) and Dr Raquel  Vasconcelos (CIBIO/BIOPOLIS), with substitute member Professor David Gonçalves (FCUP-CIBIO/BIOPOLIS). 

Publicity and communication of results: The ranking of applications will be published at a visible and public area of Institution facilities, and all candidates will be informed by email about the result of their application.
