1. The Board of Directors of Associação BIOPOLIS, has decided to open an international call for PhD holder researchers, under a work contract for a non-fixed term. This announcement is intended to 3 (three) research positions (Reference BIOPOLIS 2022-79) to pursue scientific research activities in the project "InBIO Programático FUI 2020-2023 ”, with the reference UIDP/50027/2020, supported by national funds by FCT/MCTES, in the areas of Biological Sciences. The aims are to develop research along three main lines covering the whole research field of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology: 1) Evolution, Genetics & Genomics: aiming at understanding biogeographic patterns, the formation of new species and hybridization, adaptation, domestication and co-evolution; 2) Biodiversity, Ecology & Conservation, aiming at understanding the mechanisms driving species persistence and diversity from local communities to the global scale, and to inform biodiversity conservation strategies; and 3) Sustainability, Ecosystems & the Environment, aiming at understanding how human actions interact with natural processes to affect ecosystems and the environment at large, and to find practical solutions to promote the sustainable use of the natural resources.

2. Applicable Legislation
Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of August 29th, amended by Law 57/2017 and Regulatory Decree No. 11- A / 2017 which approved the doctorate hiring regime destined to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all knowledge areas (RJEC); Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law 7/2009 of February 12, in its actual form.

3. Pursuant to article 13 of RJEC, the tender selection panel is formed by: Gabriel Marais (Member of the Board at CIBIO/BIOPOLIS, President of the jury), Luís Silva (Associate Professor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of University of Azores and Director of CIBIO-Açores/BIOPOLIS, vowel), Miguel Bugalho (Principal Investigator at the Centre for Applied Ecology "Prof. Baeta Neves " (CEABN) and Assistant Professor of Forest and Wildllife Ecology and Conservation at the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Instituto Superior de Agronomia (ISA), School of Agriculture, University of Lisbon (CEABN/InBIO), vowel) and Pedro Beja (Member of the board, CIBIO-BIOPOLIS, substitute).

4. The workplace shall be at Associação BIOPOLIS/CIBIO – Centro de Investigação em Biodiversidade e Recursos Genéticos. Depending of the research group the candidate will integrate, the work can take place at the CIBIO headquearters located at Rua Padre Armando Quintas nº7 | 4485-661 Vairão, at Centre for Applied Ecology "Prof. Baeta Neves" (CEABN), at the pole of CIBIO-Lisboa, located at Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Tapada da Ajuda 1349-017 Lisboa or at the pole of CIBIO-Azores, at Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologias, Universidade dos Açores, R. Mãe de Deus 13A, 9500-321 Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Açores. Visits to other collaborating labs may take place.

5. Monthly remuneration to be paid is that set by subheading a) nr.1 article 15 of RJEC and article nr 2 of the Regulatory Decree nr. 11-A/2017, corresponding to level 33 of the Tabela Remuneratória Única, approved by Order no. 1553-C/2008 of December 31st, i.e. 2153,94 Euros.

6. The application can be submitted by any national, foreign and stateless candidate(s) holding a doctorate degree in Biology (Biodiversity or Evolutive Biology), Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, Environmental Sciences or related areas and a scientific and professional curriculum whose profile is suited for the activity described below (item 7). In case the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of 16 October, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of work contract.

7. The tender admission general requirements are those defined in the previous point 6, and additional specific requirements of experience, testified by the publication of scientific articles, for each one of the three research positions are:
7.1
1) Evolution, Genetics & Genomics:
a) Proven ability to analyse and interpret genetic, evolutionary or biogeographical patterns;
b) Proven ability to analyse and interpret evolutionary processes, such as the formation of new taxa, and processes of hybridisation, adaptation, domestication and co-evolution.

2) Biodiversity, Ecology & Conservation:
a) Proven ability to analyse and interpret ecological mechanisms, such as those leading to the maintenance of biological diversity, from local populations and biological communities to the global scale of the biosphere;
b) Proven ability to discuss and formulate strategies for the conservation of biodiversity and the application of tools for the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources.

3) Sustainability, Ecosystems & the Environment:
a) Proven ability to analyse and synthesise how human actions interact with natural processes, affecting ecosystems and the environment in general;
b) Proven ability to analyse and formulate practical solutions and application of tools to promote sustainable management of the environment and natural resources.

7.2 The candidates must submit a work plan identical to the one required in the CEEC Individual Call (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/contratacaodoutorados/empregocientifico/docs/guiao_candidatura.pdf). Briefly, the Work Plan should consist of:
1. Research plan:
1.1. Background (Maximum 3 000 characters)
1.2. Research plan and methods (Maximum 5 000 characters)
1.3. Expected outcomes (Maximum 2 000 characters)
1.4. Ethical issues (If applicable) (Maximum 2 000 characters)
1.5. Compliance with the goals of the 2030 Agenda (Maximum 800 characters)
1.6. References (Maximum 3 000 characters)
7.3 The candidate must be able to work well in a team, have an excellent command of the English language, both oral and written, and good communication skills.
7.4 Good problem-solving skills are also expected.

8. Evaluation criteria are the following:
- Curriculum vitae (50%)
- Work Plan (30%)
- Motivation letter (20%)

- Curriculum vitae with a weighting factor of 50% considering; i) Scientific publications - books, book chapters, articles in scientific journals and in international conference proceedings in which the candidate was an author or co-author; ii) participation in research projects, evaluating the presentation of approved national and international applications and non-approved and the execution of funded research projects; iii) mentoring and supervision of undergraduate, masters and/or PhD students; v) participation in program committees of scientific events and the holding of invited lectures in scientific meetings or in other institutions.
According to each of the three research positions announced, relevant experience in:

1) Evolution, Genetics & Genomics:
I. Biogeography and/or Population Biology - 25%.
II. Phylogeny and/or Population Genetics - 25%.

2) Biodiversity, Ecology & Conservation:
I. Biodiversity and its ecological function - 25%.
II. Biodiversity Conservation - 25%.

3) Sustainability, Ecosystems & Environment:
I. Dynamics of ecosystems and/or environment in General - 25%.
II. Sustainability of natural resources - 25%.

- The Work Plan with a 30% weighting factor considering the relevance and innovative nature of the proposed research plan (based on the state of the art in the scientific area in question and previous work done by the candidate); progress beyond the current state of the art; adequacy of the adopted methodology, feasibility of the work plan and framework in one of the InBIO Associate Laboratory/BIOPOLIS research groups; the clear identification of the mission and scientific challenges addressed by the research plan and its alignment with the objectives of Agenda 2030 (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/development-agenda/).

- motivation letter with a weighting factor of 20% considering the reasons for which the application is submitted and where it is demonstrated that the candidate presents the appropriate profile to the announced position and meets all the general and special admission requirements.

9. In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. This will be aimed at obtaining clarifications and explanations about the curricular elements and additional information as well as to evaluate the attitude profile and motivation of the candidate.
The final score of each jury member is obtained by the following assessment: 90% scientific and curricular career evaluation and 10% interview.

10. Candidate final classification system shall be given based on a scale 0 to 100.

11. The panel shall deliberate by means of roll-call vote justified under adopted and disclosed selection criteria, with no abstentions allowed.

12. Minutes of panel meetings shall be executed and include a summary of all occurrences of said meeting, as well as of all votes casted by the members and respective reasoning, and shall be provided to candidates whenever required.

13. After selection criteria application, the panel shall prepare a sorted list of approved candidates and respective classification.

14. Panel’s final decision shall be validated by the leader of the institution, who is also in charge of deciding about the hiring.

15. Application formalization:

15.2. The application period is from 23/11/2022 to 13/01/2023

16. All candidates who formalize their applications in an improper way or fail to prove the requirements imposed by this tender are excluded from admission. In case of doubt, the panel is entitled to request any candidate to present further documentation supporting their statements.

17. False statements provided by the candidates shall be punished by law.

18. Both admitted and excluded candidate list and final classification list shall be notified by email.

19. Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: After notification, all candidates have 10 working days to respond. Panel’s final decisions are pronounced within a period of 90 working days, from response period deadline.

20. This tender is exclusively destined to fill this specify position and can be terminated at any time until approval of final candidate list, expiring with the respective occupation of said position.

21. 22. The panel has approved this announcement in meeting held on 21/11/2022.

23. According to Decree-Law no. 29/2001 of 3 February, disabled candidates shall be preferred in a situation of equal classification, and said preference supersedes any legal preferences. Candidates must declare, on their honour, their respective disability degree, type of disability and communication/expression means to be used during selection period on their application form, under the regulations above.
