1. Associação BIOPOLIS is opening an international call for one PhD position to carry out scientific and technological research activities in the broad area of Forest Ecology and Management (Biological Sciences) at Associação BIOPOLIS, hosting institution of CIBIO – Research Center on Biodiversity and Genetic Resources, InBIO Associated Laboratory, within a non-fixed term time contract of employment under the Labour Code, with the purpose of filling one position within the scope of funding nº CEECINST/00104/2021 entitled CEEC INSTITUCIONAL, funded by the FCT/MCTES.

Within the scope of the above-mentioned funding programme, the researcher, to be hired, must carry out research and development activities and all other scientific and technical activities within the CIBIO-InBIO mission, as well as:
a) Develop research in the fields of forest ecology, biodiversity, and ecosystem services, with a strong focus on restoration ecology, and including above and below ground (soil) ecology and processes.
b) To design, coordinate and implement research and development projects in the priority thematic areas.
c) To develop collaborative research projects with private and public stakeholders, towards improving the conservation, management and sustainable use of forest ecosystems and their services.
d) To coordinate and participate in training and communication activities that enhance transfer of knowledge from research to application.
e) To supervise and participate in the PhD and MSc training programs of the institution.
f) To attract funds for the development of research related to the themes of the call, through the preparation of funding applications to public and private institutions, at the national and international levels.

2. Applicable Legislation
Decree-Law no. 57/2016 of August 29th, amended by Law 57/2017 and Regulatory Decree No. 11- A / 2017 which approved the doctorate hiring regime destined to stimulate scientific and technological employment for all knowledge areas (RJEC); Portuguese Labour Code, approved by Law 7/2009 of February 12, in its actual form.

3. The tender selection panel is formed by: Pedro Beja (Vice-Director of Associação BIOPOLIS, President of the jury); João Honrado (Assistant Professor at University of Porto and researcher at CIBIO-BIOPOLIS, vogal), Francisco Moreira (Coordinator researcher at Associação BIOPOLIS/CIBIO-InBIO, vogal), Paulo Célio Alves (Associate Professor at University of Porto and researcher at CIBIO-BIOPOLIS, substitute).

4. The workplace shall be at Associação BIOPOLIS, CIBIO- Research Centre in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources in Campus de Vairão, Rua Padre Armando Quintas, Vairão, Portugal, and may involve travel in Portugal and abroad to the service or representation of the contracting entity.

5. The gross monthly salary entitle is € 3.230,21, corresponding to 195 index of the Scientific Research Career (Anexo I do Decreto-Lei nº 124/99, de 20 de Abril).

6. Applications can be submitted by any national, foreign and stateless candidates holding a doctorate degree in Biological Sciences and related area and a scientific and professional curriculum whose profile is suited for the activity described below (item 7).
If the doctorate degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the stage of signing the contract.

7. The tender admission requirements are those defined in the previous point 6, and specifically:
7.1 The candidates should have a solid background (at least five years) of postdoctoral experience and demonstration of a research trajectory in at least one, but preferably more, of the following fields related to forest ecology and management: biodiversity patterns and processes; ecological restoration; rewilding; ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration; conservation; fire ecology; soil biodiversity and ecology.

7.2 Candidates should demonstrate proven experience on at least some of the following scientific and technical skills: ecological modelling, statistical data analysis and software (including R), geographic information systems and remote sensing; analysis of soil biodiversity (conventional and /or metagenomics).

7.3 Candidates should have experience in participating and leading research projects and demonstrate their ability to obtain national and foreign funds in competitive calls.

7.4 Applicants should have experience in advanced training activities, particularly in the orientation of PhD students.

7.5 The candidates must submit a work plan identical to the one required in the CEEC Individual Call (, providing an outline of the proposed research to be developed. Briefly, the Work Plan should consist of:
1. Research plan:
1.1. Background (Maximum 3 000 characters)
1.2. Research plan and methods (Maximum 5 000 characters)
1.3. Expected outcomes (Maximum 2 000 characters)
1.4. Ethical issues (If applicable) (Maximum 2 000 characters)
1.5. Compliance with the goals of the 2030 Agenda (Maximum 800 characters)
1.6. References (Maximum 3 000 characters)

8. Evaluation criteria are the following:
- Curriculum vitae (40%)
- Work Plan (50%)
- Motivation letter (10%)

9. In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. This will be aimed at obtaining clarifications and explanations about the curricular elements and additional information as well as to evaluate the attitude profile and motivation of the candidate.
The final score of each jury member is obtained by the following assessment: 90% scientific and curricular career evaluation, work plan and motivation letter and 10% interview.
The final classification of each candidate is given by the arithmetic mean of the classifications attributed by the jury members. In the event of a tie, the chairman of the jury shall have the casting vote.

10. Candidate final classification system shall be given based on a scale 0 to 100.

11. The panel shall deliberate by means of roll-call vote justified under adopted and disclosed selection criteria, with no abstentions allowed.

12. Minutes of panel meetings shall be executed and include a summary of all occurrences of said meeting, as well as of all votes casted by the members and respective reasoning and shall be provided to candidates whenever required.

13. After selection criteria application, the panel shall prepare a sorted list of approved candidates and respective classification.

14. Panel’s final decision shall be validated by the leader of the institution, who is also in charge of deciding about the hiring.

15. Application formalization:
15.1 The applications should be submitted to the electronic address with the subject"CEECINST/00104/2021_2". It must include announcement reference, full name, number, and date of validity of the Identity Card or passport, tax identification number, date and place of birth, contact address, including e-mail address and telephone contact.

15.2 Applications shall include all supported documents encompassed by section 6 and 7 for tender admission, namely:
I) Certificate or diploma copy of the doctoral degree and proof of recognition of the degree, if applicable.
II) detailed Curriculum vitae.
III) Work Plan submitted by the candidates according to section 7.5.
iv) Motivation Letter indicating the reasons why the application is being submitted and showing that the candidate presents the right profile to the announced position and meets all the general and special admission requirements.
IV) Other relevant documents for the evaluation of the qualification in the related scientific area.

15.3 Candidates shall submit their application files and supporting documentation, in a digital form, preferentially in PDF format, to the electronic address

15.4. The application period is from 06/07/2022 to 30/09/2022.

16. All candidates who formalize their application incorrectly or who fail to provide the requirements imposed by this tender are excluded from admission. In case of doubt, the panel is entitled to request further documentation to support candidate statements.

17. False statements provided by the candidates shall be punished by law.

18. Both admitted and excluded candidate list and final classification list shall be published at the address of Associação BIOPOLIS (Rua Padre Armando Quintas, nº 7, 4485-661 Vairão), in the website of the Institute and the selected candidate shall be notified by email.

19. Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline: After publication, all candidates have 10 working days to respond.

20. This tender is exclusively destined to fill this specific vacancy and can be terminated at any time until the approval of the final candidate list, expiring with the respective occupation of the said vacancy.

21. 22. According to Decree-Law no. 29/2001 of 3 February, disabled candidates shall be preferred in a situation of equal classification, and said preference supersedes any legal preferences. 23. The selection of candidate to be hired is determined by orientations and regulations issued by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia upon verification of all legal requirements. Associação BIOPOLIS is entitled to terminate the present process in case the legal requirements are not fulfilled, or if an adequate candidate to the position is not found.
