Call for proposals Biopolis 2022 - docs and postdocs

Job description:

Call for proposals Biopolis 2022 - docs and postdocs

This call for proposals is part of a European project funded by the H2020 Teaming programme (BIOPOLIS). The BIOPOLIS project aims to support the development in Portugal of a centre of excellence in research, development and innovation in the fields of biodiversity, agro-biodiversity and ecosystem services.
This centre will be based on an existing laboratory, CIBIO. The University of Montpellier - UM (and its associated tutelles) is a partner in this capacity building project. The project will finance mobility and events contributing to the development of the centre, but also and essentially human resources, including doctoral students and young researchers, who are the subject of this call for proposals.

Objectives
This call for proposals aims to hire doctoral students and young researchers on the Teaming project funds managed by the UM (thus with hiring by the UM).
It is part of the WP5 of the Teaming project. We are aiming at situations where these young recruits will be able to train in Montpellier (supervised by one or more Montpellier researchers), in the framework of projects co-constructed with one or more CIBIO researchers (co-supervision). These young researchers (PhD students and young researchers) will thus participate in the transfer of knowledge from Montpellier to CIBIO, and in the development of the project at CIBIO (ideally leading to future recruitment at CIBIO).
This first call for proposals will support projects arising from existing collaborations between Montpellier and CIBIO. Future calls will allow time for new collaborations to be set up (bearing in mind that the Teaming project ends in September 2027).
In total (for all the calls for proposals), the UM will be able to finance at least 5 PhDs and 10 years of young researcher contracts. BIOPOLIS Montpellier credits will also cover the mobility of young recruits, their supervisors and Montpellier collaborators from France to Portugal. The mobility of partners from Portugal to France will be covered by Portuguese funds and does not fall within the scope of this call for proposals. A limited budget will also be allocated to each recruit for personal research and IT equipment.

Project eligibility
The 10 UMRs involved in BIOPOLIS (AGAP, AMAP, CEFE, CEEM, CBGP, DIADE, IHPE, IPSIM, ISEM and MIVEGEC) are eligible for the call. The scientific project must correspond to one or other of the major axes of BIOPOLIS (biodiversity, agrobiodiversity and ecosystem services). All scientific disciplines are welcome.

Submission procedures
Projects from each unit are submitted exclusively by the Unit Directors (DU). The files are submitted in PDF format according to the attached template and sent by email.
The application form including a presentation of the project requires a visa from CIBIO-Biopolis direction (to be sent to the executive committee members: P. Beja and G. Marais).

Amount available
This call will be able to finance the salaries of one to three PhD students (over 3 years each) and one to three young researchers (up to two years each). The volume will be adjusted according to the number of mature projects, with a similar call for proposals to follow in spring 2023. Each recruit will receive a research grant and a mobility grant to the Portuguese laboratory (see eligible expenses below).

Calendar
Official opening: 14 December 2022 (Reminder - Pre-announcement made to the BIOPOLIS contact points in the UMRs on 28 November 2022)
Submission of proposals by Unit Directors: before 30 January 2023, 12:00
Final decisions: During February 2023
Start of recruitment procedures : April 2023, in coordination with the doctoral schools (for doctoral students)

Eligible expenses
Salary of a doctoral student (valued according to the UM salary scale, currently 125.5 k€ for 3 years) or of a young researcher (valued according to the UM salary scale, currently between 51k€ and 55k€/year, depending on the level of recruitment and experience) for a maximum duration of 24 months; a package of research expenses expressly justified by the project, which may include consumables, services, the purchase of a personal computer, missions other than to the Portuguese laboratory, for a maximum amount of 10k€ per year.
A budget for mobility expenses to the Portuguese laboratory (short and long stays) for the recruits and their Montpellier supervisors, expressly justified and for a maximum amount of 9 k€ per year. These two envelopes are not fungible and may be distributed over the duration of the project according to needs.

Selection criteria
Resources will be allocated taking into account the following criteria:
• Adequacy of the project with the main scientific objectives of the Teaming project.
• Effectiveness of the existing collaboration.
• Contribution of the UM partner to the development of the project at CIBIO (scientific or technical skills, financial or material resources, etc.).
• Development prospects of the project for CIBIO, within this collaboration and/or more widely.
• Clarity and interest of the objectives and outcomes.
• Feasibility (material and financial) of the recruit's project.

An evaluation committee will analyse the eligible applications and will propose a ranking of the applications for final selection.
