Computational Biology and Metagenomics - CompBio

The computational biology and metagenomics (CompBio) group aims to address relevant biological problems using computational methods and high throughput sequencing. We generate and integrate large datasets (big data), namely high-throughput sequencing data with a focus on genomic, transcriptomic and metagenomic data, to generate the best possible hypotheses to biological problems. To this end we apply advanced computational methods or develop novel methods through the design of new algorithms, implementation of software pipelines, and by exploiting machine learning. Although we address a broad range of topics, ranging from machine learning to cancer genomics, we are currently particularly interested in applying metagenomics and metabarcoding to biodiversity assessment, invasive species monitoring and environmental (bio)monitoring. This diverse and integrative research is attained through strong interdisciplinary collaborations within and outside the group.
