WILDLIFE HEALTH IN NORWAY: RESEARCH AND SURVEILLANCE IN A ONE HEALTH PERSPECTIVE

CASUAL SEMINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION

 

 

The One Health concept is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment, recognizing the intimate links between these compartments. This seminar will focus on this concept, with an emphasis on wildlife health, based on extensive transboundary research on Artic species.

 

Prof. Dr. Carlos Gonçalo das Neves graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of then Technical University of Lisbon in 2004, then went to Norway where he began his research on viral diseases of Arctic wildlife at the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the Norwegian School of Veterinary Sciences, having obtained the PhD in Veterinary Sciences - specialty virology, in 2009. With several scientific papers published in international scientific journals and extensive experience in coordinating scientific projects, Prof. Dr. Carlos das Neves is currently Director for Food Security and Emerging Health Threats at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, where he served between 2014-2017 as Director of Virology. He is also an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at the University of Tromsø.
Prof. Dr. Carlos das Neves has developed his scientific research in the field of virology in several species such as reindeer or seals and accumulated over the years extensive experience of field work in Scandinavia and other areas of the Arctic such as Greenland, Alaska, Siberia or Canada. In 2008 his work was recognized with the Terry Amundson Award by the Wildlife Diseases Association, world organization of which he is currently the Vice President. He currently works mostly with issues related to the topic ONE HEALTH with a focus on emerging zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance in wildlife, topics in which he has been promoting international cooperation between Norway and countries such as Brazil, Canada, China, India and Portugal, among others.
In 2013 he obtained the European Veterinary Specialist degree from the European College of Zoological Medicine in Wildlife Population Health. In 2014 Prof. Dr. Carlos das Neves was nominated by the Norwegian government as an expert on health and animal welfare of the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety. Healso served as Honorary Consul of Portugal in Norway between 2010 and 2017.
