SMALL ISLANDS ENVIRONMENTAL AND SPATIAL PLANNING: THE WORK OF CIBIO AZORES

Helena Calado, an assistant professor in the Department of Biology of the University of Azores and researcher in the group Island Biogeography and Conservation in CIBIO Azores, will give a seminar entitled “Small Islands Environmental and Spatial Planning” on 28th of October, at 14.30, in Campus Agrário de Vairão Auditorium.

 

In the CIBIO Açores/BIOISLE Group there is a line of action dedicated to Environmental Policy and Planning issues. This line of action is dedicated to research and comunity services in the field of geographical information, management and spatial planning. Therefore, the specific features of Small Islands are presented and analysed in an integrated and holistic approach in research on: Natural Resources Management; Environmental Impact Assessment; Preparation and Analysis of Sector Plans; Municipal Master Plans; Special Plans for Land Use Planning; Design of Information Systems (GIS) and also on Law and Public Policies definition. The presentation will go through an introduction on Island specific features to be considered, the solutions tailored to answer their constraints and how they are being integrated on the work produced by the group.

 

Helena Calado is Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology of the University of the Azores since 2001. She is graduated in Geography and Regional Planning from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, New University of Lisbon, and holds a PhD in Geography - Land Use and Environmental Planning, by the University of the Azores. During the last decade the main themes of work and research are: Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Land Use Planning; Environmental Management; Environmental Law; Environmental Policy; Maritime Spatial Planning; Regional Environmental Policies.
