RESEARCH THROUGH DESIGNING IN THE FIELD OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE. DESIGNING AS A RESEARCH STRATEGY AND METHOD: APPLYING ACADEMIC CRITERIA OF SOUND RESEARCH
CASUAL SEMINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION
Design does not equal research. Designing can be a powerful strategy and method for research to define wicked spatial problems and search for innovative spatial solutions. In order to continue to develop landscape architecture as a design discipline it is important that the theoretical, methodical, and technical foundations of spatial design research are clarified and strengthened. To produce new knowledge it should be relevant and reliable. To elaborate this a set of criteria for accepted, responsible research are translated into practical requirements that can guide the research through designing processes in academic and professional contexts. The steps in the research process are illustrated with some examples.
Jeroen de Vries (1953) is a landscape architect with a mission to foster the professional and academic quality of the discipline. Combines vision and innovation with management and sustainable support of organisations. Graduated as a landscape architect of Wageningen University with a specialisation in landscape design and ecology. Worked at the DG Groep and a teacher and researcher at HVHL University of Applied Science. Jeroen supported landscape architecture on a national and European level by serving on the executive committee of the Netherlands Association for Landscape Architecture (NVTL; 1998-2003), in the recognition panel of schools for EFLA (1997-2005), as a member of the Executive Committee of ECLAS (1997-2013, president 2004-2009) and the LE:NOTRE Steering Committee (2001-2012). Currently he is on the advisory board of the DG Groep and Director Researcher of the LE:NOTRE Institute. He is an independent landscape architecture researcher. In 2017 he was honoured with the ECLAS Life Time Achievement award for excellence in teaching, research and international organisation.
