PlantBioDays 3 | BIODIVERSITY and ADAPTATION

PlantBioDays 3 | BIODIVERSITY and ADAPTATION

Plant diversity within the Mediterranean region is a hot topic of interest when it comes to plant evolution, given that its ecosystems harbour the richest flora of the extra-tropical areas. The 3rd edition of CIBIO-InBIO’s PlantBioDays initiative will specifically address plant biodiversity, evolution and adaptation, and is geared towards both the general scientific community as well as students in the biological field. This edition addresses themes like biodiversity of Portuguese flora, with several identified problems or novelties in terms of plant taxonomy and nomenclature in the biogeographic context of the Western Iberian Peninsula.

We intend to go beyond classic taxonomy and systematics, by highlighting several case studies and examples within the Portuguese flora in urgent need of clarification, with major implications for conservation and evolutionary characterization of the Western Mediterranean Flora. There will also be an emphasis on new methodological and genetic tools like Next Generation Sequencing. Following several case studies that model from crop species, we will delve into forefront techniques that may help us understand the underlying processes that explains plant diversity, evolution and adaptation.
