Models in Invasion Science: From Theory to Practice

From 06 Mar 2023 until 09 Mar 2023 - BIOPOLIS-CIBIO, Vairão, Portugal (Face-to-face)
Models in Invasion Science: From Theory to Practice
With the rapid expansion of invasive alien species, developing robust ecological models is increasingly critical to support successful management strategies. These models can therefore guide future surveillance efforts for citizens, managers, decision-makers and researchers.

Objectives and skills that will be provided
• Theoretical basis of invasion ecology;
• Introduction to modelling approaches in biological invasions;
• Types of input data and respective sources;
• Basic procedures in R software and statistical programming;
• General application of R modelling packages;
• Spatial analyses of ecological and environmental data;
• Interpretation and implications of model results

PROGRAM (24 hours)
Day 01 | March 06, 2023
Welcome message
LECTURE - Alien invasive species: patterns, processes, and impacts
LECTURE – Models in Invasion Ecology: Challenges and Applications
PRACTICALS – Obtaining useful data for modelling (e.g. species occurrences and environmental data)

Day 02 | March 07, 2023
LECTURE – Introduction to Habitat Distribution Models
PRACTICALS – Spatial modelling of single alien invader species using biomod2 (R package)

SCHEDULE
9:45am to 17:45pm, lunch between 13:00-14:00

NOTES
The course will be taught in English.
The course is developed for students and researchers at early stage of their career. The participants should be familiar with the R environment.
Students should use their own laptops for the course. Students are required to install some software in their laptops prior to the course. The necessary instructions to perform this task will send by email one week prior to the start of the course.
