GENOMES, SPECIES AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES: DO WE HAVE THE TOOLS TO PURSUE THE PARADIGM?

Casual Seminar in Biodiversity and Evolution 

On the 14th of May, Michael Bruford will present the casual seminar “Genomes, species and ecosystem services: do we have the tools to pursue the paradigm?” on behalf of the CONGEN Group.

Mike will talk about the developing conservation and policy landscape focusing on the transition from simply conserving biodiversity to ensuring the provisioning of ecosystem services. He will discuss the use of genomics in conservation prioritisation, landscape genomics, and use some recent work on genomics in threatened falcons as an example. He will finish by asking whether we have the tools to pursue the ecosystem services paradigm from a genomics perspective and briefly describe some ongoing work that attempts to address this question.

Mike leads the Organisms and Environment Division of the School of Biosciences, Cardiff University. His work focuses on applying genomics to threatened species, mostly in tropical ecosystems. He is Editor-in-Chief of Heredity and the academic lead for the Wales Biodiversity Partnership.
