FORGOTTEN IN THE OCEAN: SYSTEMATICS, BIOGEOGRAPHY AND EVOLUTION OF THE REPTILES OF THE SOCOTRA ARCHIPELAGO

Dr. Salvador Carranza will give a seminar entitled ”Forgotten in the Ocean: Systematics, Biogeography and Evolution of the Reptiles of the Socotra Archipelago" on 25th of November, at 14.30, in Campus Agrário de Vairão auditorium.

This seminar concerns the evolutionary history of the reptile fauna of the archipelago of Socotra, a biodiversity hotspot in the Indian Ocean that has until recently been poorly studied.

Dr. Salvador Carranza is currently a researcher at CSIC-UPF in Barcelona. He is interested in the historical biogeography and evolution of the reptiles and amphibians around the westernmost Mediterranean, and also the uses of phylogenies to study evolutionary, ecological and biogeographical processes in the North African and Arabian arid reptile faunas.

Afterwards we will have a student seminar with João Pedro Tereso (PhD student; Supervisors: Rubim Almeida da Silva; Pablo Ramil Rego) entitled “Agriculture and environmental change in NW Iberia from the Neolithic (5000 cal BC) to Late Antiquity (600 cal AD)”
