DNA-based monitoring of brown bears and other large carnivores in Norway

INVITED TALK - WEBINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION

DNA-based monitoring became an important component in large carnivore management in Scandinavia. The Norwegian Large Predator Monitoring Program makes use of mainly noninvasively collected samples to assess the number of individuals and status of the country’s wolf, brown bear, wolverine and Golden eagle population. We dig a bit deeper into the available genetic data of the brown bear, which has been monitored annually with noninvasive genetic sampling in Norway for about 15 years, and look where regular DNA-based monitoring, transborder collaboration and harmonization of methods can lead us to.

Alexander Kopatz is a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) in Trondheim, Norway. His research interest is the conservation genetics of large carnivores, particular brown bears in Northern Europe.
