Current knowledge on the evolution, diversity and conservation of the Cabo Verde Flora
INVITED TALK - WEBINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION

The main goal of this communication is to present recent studies done by the author and collaborators, which have contributed to the knowledge of the Cabo Verde plant diversity. Cabo Verde is the least studied Macaronesian archipelago (i.e. Azores, Madeira, Savage, Canary, and Cabo Verde) in terms of biodiversity. In this communication, it is provide an overview of the current knowledge of the plant diversity in these islands, namely the taxonomic knowledge of the native species, its conservation status and the available molecular studies performed with Macaronesian endemic flora. After illustrating the current knowledge of the Cabo Verde biodiversity, we will present new research initiatives developed between Portuguese and Cabo Verde Institutions and in this field, it is highlighted a project funded by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) from Portugal. The project intituled "Climate change and plant genetic resources: the overlooked potential of Cabo Verde's endemic flora" aims to contribute with data to promote the conservation of plant diversity and sustainable management of Cabo Verde's natural resources, and will be briefly presented in this communication.

Maria Romeiras studied Biology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon [FCUL], completed her MSc Degree at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia [ISA/UL] and obtained her PhD degree in 2005 on Molecular Biology, at the University of Lisbon. Since, February 2017, Maria is Assistant Professor at ISA/UL. In March of 2018, Maria joined the list of prestigious corresponding members of Academy of Sciences of Lisbon. Over the last years, Maria has published over 12 book chapters and more than 60 peer-reviewed papers in international journals. Also, she has actively disseminated her scientific research with more than 150 conference presentations, and was member of the Organizing Committees of over 10 International Congresses. Currently, she is supervising several graduate students (e.g. 6 PhD students and some MS-students). Maria has participated in several research projects, being in the last years Principal Investigator in two FCT projects focused on the study of Tropical Plant Diversity & Conservation, and currently lead the project "CVAgrobiodiversity” funded (298kEUR) by Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) and FCT.
