ASSESSING AND MITIGATING THE IMPACTS OF LINEAR INFRASTRUCTURES ON BIODIVERSITY: FROM GREY DATA TO IMPROVED MANAGEMENT DECISIONS

STUDENT SEMINAR IN BIODIVERSITY AND EVOLUTION

Worldwide the proliferation of linear infrastructures such as power lines and roads poses significant threat to biodiversity. The negative ecological impacts of these infrastructures are well documented in literature, with the direct injury or fatality of animals (due to collision and electrocution) being one of the most significant. Over the past decades large amounts of data have been collected on wildlife mortality at linear infrastructures, under the scope of Environmental Impact Assessment procedures and conservation projects (e.g. LIFE nature projects). However, these data are scattered and in urgent need for revision and standardization. The combined analysis of different data sets allows a more broadly understanding of wildlife mortality drivers at the different types of linear infrastructures, and evaluation of the effectiveness of measures used to minimize this impact. This knowledge can then be translated by environmental specialists, regulators and project developers into better and more accurate planning / management decisions. In this talk, Joana will present the first results of her PhD project and forthcoming research, which aims to: (i) improve the scientific knowledge on the drivers of wildlife mortality at linear infrastructures; (ii) optimize the methodologies used to assess and mitigate this impact; and, ultimately, (iii) provide guidance for the planning and environmental management of future projects.

Joana Bernardino holds a MSc in Ecology and Environmental Management from University of Lisbon. Currently, she is concluding the 1st year of her PhD project, under the supervision of Dr. Francisco Moreira (CIBIO-InBIO) and co-supervision of Dr. Regina Bispo (FCT - NOVA University of Lisbon) and Dr. Sara Santos (University of Évora). Joana’s main research interest is the development of methodologies to assess and mitigate wildlife fatality at linear infrastructures, such as power lines and roads. Her research is being conducted under the scope of REN Biodiversity Chair and LIFE LINES project.
