A QUICK GUIDE TO INTERGOVERNMENTAL PLATFORM ON BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

23 Jun 2017 - András Báldi, Centre for Ecological Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Hungary | July 14, 2017 - 12h00 | CIBIO-InBIO’s Auditorium, Campus de Vairão
A QUICK GUIDE TO INTERGOVERNMENTAL PLATFORM ON BIODIVERSITY AND ECOSYSTEM SERVICES

Although the conservation of biological diversity is hot in the policy arena for decades already (e.g. Earth Summit 1992, CountDown 2010), the strong decline of species and populations was even not slowed down. Thus, a conceptual change was needed. The ecosystem service approach provides such a framework, where biodiversity directly links to society. This concept is useful to give biodiversity a value which can be included into decision making. IPBES is the highest possible level in policy, as its members are the governments. Therefore, it provides an efficient „bridge” between science and policy, but also has its political rules. The presentation will give a short guide to help to understand IPBES’s aims, activities and importance in policy.

Báldi is the general director of Centre for Ecological Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the largest ecology institution in Hungary. His research interest is in conservation biology, mainly on the effect of farmland management on biodiversity and ecosystem services. His publication record includes papers in leading journals like Science, Ecology Letters, Nature Communications, Biological Conservation, etc. He is member of the Environment Panel of the European Academies Scientific Advisory Council (EASAC), was a member of the Multidisciplinary Expert Panel of IPBES, and was president of Society for Conservation Biology –Europe Section. He is editor of the journal Conservation Letters.
