PARRISE Project in Portugal - Promoting Attainment of RRI in Science Education

PARRISE Project in Portugal - Promoting Attainment of RRI in Science Education

PARRISE (Promoting Attainment of Responsible Research & Innovation in Science Education) is an European project funded in the context of the Seventh Framework Programme (SiS-2013-2.2.1-1, Grant agreement: 612438), which seeks to advance science teachers training at a gloval scale.

About PARRISE
A shared goal across Europe is to build a scientifically literate society, which enables its citizens to participate in the research and innovation process as part of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI). This calls for democratic citizenship education, in which two educational approaches, often presented independently in schools, are integrated: Inquiry-Based Science Education (IBSE) and Socio-Scientific Issues-Based Learning. We call this integrated approach Socio-Scientific Inquiry-Based Learning (SSIBL).

This educational methodology promotes democratic citizenship through the integration of social issues and related scientific knowledge. The overarching aim of the PARRISE project is to collect and share existing best practices across Europe and develop learning tools, materials and professional development courses for science teachers based on the SSIBL approach.

The project will build on recently developed IBSE insights and foster implementation of IBSE in educational practice.

Strategic impact
PARRISE will provide guidance for teachers and teacher educators who seek assistance in integrating socio-scientific issues in the IBSE pedagogy. The project will inventory, evaluate and make numerous modules for the training of teacher educators available. Similar modules will be explored and integrated in informal settings such as science and technology centres.

The PARRISE Consortium
PARRISE is a multidisciplinary consortium aiming to facilitate networking activities among teachers, teacher educators and educational researchers at 18 institutions, in 11 countries. The consortium members have extensive expertise in inquiry-based science education and in addressing socio-scientific issues in teacher training and student learning contexts.

Main Goals fo PARRISE

  • Provide an overall educational framework for socio-scientific inquiry-based learning (SSIBL) in formal and informal learning environments
  • Identify examples of best practice which reflect the SSIBL framework
  • Build transnational communities consisting of science teachers, science teacher educators, science communicators, and curriculum and citizenship education experts to implement good practices of SSIBL.
  • Develop SSIBL competencies among European primary and secondary science teachers and teacher educators.
  • Disseminate resources and best practice through PARRISE website, digital and print-based publications online and face to face courses authored by national and international networks.
  • Evaluate the educators’ success using the improved SSIBL materials with pre-service and in-service teachers.
