I am a Biologist with a main expertise in Molecular Biology.

Presently I have a 3 year-Post doctoral fellowship – SFRH/BPD/112653/2015, starting in 2016 regarding the "Study of ancient wolves and early dogs in Iberia and North Africa”. I will use a transdisciplinary approach to understand evolutionary trajectories of the present¬ day dog and wolf, by bridging molecular biology, zoology and archaeology.

I am investigator in the research project ARCHAIC; PTDC/CVTLIV/ 2827/2014, whose Principal Investigator is Catarina Ginja from ENVARCH Group and I also teach at Lusófona University - Veterinary Medicine and Biology faculties.

Domestic Dogs

Population Genetics has been the main area of my scientific research. For the last years, I have been studying the genetic variability, population structure and phylogeography of a very particular human domesticate species - the domestic dog, from two interesting geographic places - the Iberian Peninsula and North-West Africa regions.

I was the Principal Investigator of a research project - PTDC/HIS-ARQ/100225/2008 – "Tracing back animal domestication in Iberia: Clues from zooarchaeology and DNA analysis”, aiming to understand the temporal changes of the genetic variability of four species: auroch, cattle, Iberian wolf and domestic dog.

Immunology

I am also involved in the training of high school teachers regarding Immunology. This training allows deepening their knowledge about the immune system. I participated in the development of the kit ImmunoGénius, a kit for teachers, based on the ELISA method, useful to interpret/assess the immunocompetence state of different dog pups (available from Ordem dos Biólogos http://ordembiologos.pt/2015/11/15/imuno-genius/).

I am also a researcher at the Centre for Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Changes (Ce3C) - FCUL (Animal Diversity and Conservation Group) and I collaborate with Unidade Centro de Arqueologia da Universidade de Lisboa (UNIARQ), Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária, I.P. (INIAV) - Unidade Estratégica de Biotecnologia e Recursos Genéticos and The Research Center for Biosciences & Health Technologies (CBIOS)/Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Lusófona University

I am a member of the Executive Board of Portuguese Biologists Association.
