I graduated in Biology and got an MSc in Ecology, Environment and Territory at the University of Porto with a thesis entitled "Biogeography and conservation of the common snipe (Gallinago gallinago): application of ecological niche models to different spatial scales during the breeding season”. In this work I developed ecological niche-based models for the common snipe distribution during the breeding season in the Iberian Peninsula and in the complete European range, by combining species occurrence data and environmental factors from each study area with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Ecological Niche Modelling (ENM) software, in order to increase the knowledge about common snipe distribution and breeding habitat selection, mainly in the peripheral and threatened Iberian populations, and to provide framework tools for the development of optimised conservation strategies.

Since then I have been working on the Archipelago of the Azores. Firstly, on a game management project, which aims the evaluation of the success of Partridge (Perdix perdix) introduction, and the study of some aspects (habitat use, survival and reproduction) of the Ecology of the Azorean common quail (Coturnix coturnix conturbans), in which I developed fieldwork by radio-tracking birds. More recently I’ve been working on a project whose purpose is to understand how competitive exclusion may play a role in constraining island biodiversity, using common snipe in the Azores as a model.

My research interests focus on ecological modelling, biogeography, landscape Ecology, conservation planning, game management, Ornithology and behaviour.
