Eliane Silva

I graduated in Biochemistry by the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) in 2011, and concluded my PhD in Veterinary Sciences in the field of Virology (Genomic Integration of Hepatitis C Virus Fragments in the European Rabbit and Lepus Europaeus: Detection and Characterization) at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the University of Porto (ICBAS-UP) in 2016.

The origin, evolutionary history, diversity and virus-host interactions involving wild/domestic animals and human are the main interests of my research. I have participated in some projects linked to e. g. rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV), European brown hare syndrome, myxoma virus, canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and SARS-CoV-2. Recently, I have concluded a project namely "Occult hepatitis C in different clinical settings: detection, characterization and diagnostic tools - OCIDIAGNOSIS, FCT, PTDC/SAU-SER/30788/2017, FEDER, POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030788” and currently I am conducting a project namely "Screening for occult hepatitis C virus infection in patients undergoing kidney transplantation in Portugal, Gilead Génese, PGG/004/2017”. I have also participated in research linked to microorganisms, such as Prototheca spp., Mycoplasma spp., Staphylococcus aureus and aquaculture microbial community.

Relatively to my work experience, I work at ICBAS-UP in the Department of Veterinary Clinics since 1998. Currently, I am a superior technician linked to the preparation and setting of practical classes of the Veterinary Microbiology, Pathology and Clinical Infectious Diseases I and II and the Clinical Pathology of Parasitary Diseases curricular units, where I also perform research in the Molecular Pathology and Immunogenetic Laboratories.
