With a degree and Ph.D. in biology from the Faculty of Sciences, Oporto University, I am dedicated to the study of environmental determination of plant communities to define ecological indicators of conservation status of habitats, especially those related to aquatic ecosystems (rivers and bogs).

My main research interests are especially focused on the study of bryophyte communities (with mosses, liverworts and hornworts) in order to improve the understanding of their ecology and contribute with chorological information needed for their conservation. I also participate in several projects related to conservation, improvement and restoration of habitats and sustainable use of natural values and water resources. Another purpose of the reasearch I am currently carrying out is to characterize the ecology and chorology of the species of the Iberian and European Red Lists to contribute with exact information for conservation measures. Simultaneously, I study the impact of changes in geomorphology, water quality and hydrology of rivers on the development of ripicolous vegetation to obtain the specialized knowledge to the elaboration of coherent management and requalification plans.
