Mission

The general objectives of CIBIO can be summarized as follows:
  1. to advance scientific knowledge in the fields of biodiversity and evolutionary biology, with a special emphasis on the understanding of processes that lead to present-day patterns of biological diversity and on the principles governing the spatial partitioning of genotypic and phenotypic variation
  2. to improve and integrate ecological, taxonomical and biogeographical knowledge at different scales, focusing on the Iberian and Mediterranean biological heritage, but also worldwide
  3. to use this knowledge to suggest appropriate conservation priorities and management tools, ranging from habitat protection and recovery to identification of cryptic species or genetically distinct domestic breeds, through dissemination to national and international conservation authorities
  4. to use data gathered from domestic and wild species to improve species management practices by collaborating with local agricultural, forestry and hunting authorities
  5. to train students at a variety of levels, from short-term visitors to PhD students, in evolutionary and conservation biology
  6. to communicate scientific activities and improve public appreciation and understanding of Biodiversity
