In 2007, a strategic and innovative partnership was established between BES (the Espírito Santo Bank), CIBIO-InBIO/UP and the ICNF (the Nature and Forest Conservation Institute). This partnership was inspired in a broader European initiative on business and biodiversity with the aims to promote the introduction of biodiversity strategies within businesses through voluntary arrangements.

The report “BES and Biodiversity” – an estimation of biodiversity impacts and environmental performance”

The report “BES and Biodiversity”, produced annually by CIBIO-InBIO since 2008, monitors and assists BES to meet its environmental objectives, acting as the bank scientific consultant in biodiversity and environmental sustainability. The report, evaluates the impact on biodiversity and the environment arising from BES’ business, as well as identifying opportunities for improvement and suggesting measures and actions to minimise the impacts detected. The impacts caused by BES can be divided in two categories: direct (resulting from the company’s day-to-day business) and indirect (arising from its financial activity).

During the partnership, BES has progressively placed eco-efficiency at the bank’s core regarding CO2, energy, water, paper, waste and procurement in order to minimize direct impacts. The bank also implemented a considerable number of its own measures and recommendations proposed by CIBIO-InBIO in order to reduce its impact on the environment.

BES Biodiversity Award

As part of its engagement to biodiversity, Banco Espírito Santo, under a partnership with CIBIO-InBIO, has launched the BES Biodiversity Award. This is a unique award in Portugal, aimed to alternately reward two different but complementary areas: Research and Conservation, and Biodiversity and Business. Over its various editions the BES Biodiversity Award consolidated its position as a benchmark award mainly due to the high quality of the winning projects and the important support it provided for the conservation of biological diversity.
